In the past few years, the art landscape in Korea has seen a significant expansion, with numerous galleries and museums emerging across the country. Whether you are in Seoul, Busan, Jeju Island, or Daegu, there are plenty of options to immerse yourself in the dynamic realm of contemporary Korean art. This guide will showcase five must-visit galleries when exploring Korea’s artistic landscape. Each gallery has its own distinct aesthetic and purpose, giving visitors a window into Korea’s vibrant artistic tradition.

Gallery Hyundai, Seoul

Gallery Hyundai is a well-known art gallery in the Gangnam district of Seoul. It has been around since 1970 and is renowned for exhibiting significant contemporary Korean artists, including Lee Ufan and Kim Whanki. The gallery has had a significant impact on Korea’s art scene. The collection at Gallery Hyundai is diverse, focusing on modern and contemporary Korean art and pieces from international artists.

Gallery Hyundai has two spaces in Sagan-dong and one in Gangnam. They also operate the Dugahun Gallery, located behind Gallery Hyundai New Space. Dugahun Gallery is a unique art space serving as a wine bar and restaurant inside a traditional Korean hanok. Gallery Hyundai supports emerging artists through initiatives like its Window Gallery, which showcases the work of both local and international artists.

Arario Gallery, Jeju Island

For an exclusive art encounter, visit Arario Gallery on Jeju Island, nestled among picturesque forests and landscapes. The gallery is located in a renovated barn, providing a cozy and rustic setting that contrasts with the polished and modern galleries you may find in the city. Arario Gallery is famous for its range of contemporary art from Korea and other countries, highlighting works that defy conventional styles and interpretations.

The museum I’m talking about is a modern art museum situated on the seafront in Jeju City. It showcases various artworks from countries such as China, Germany, Korea, and France. The exhibition is displayed in a former cinema and an old bike shop. In addition to that, visitors can experience music and a light show specially created by a French artist named Pierre Huyghe.

Wooson Gallery, Daegu

In 2012, the Wooson Gallery opened in the South Korean city of Daegu on the Bongsan Culture and Art Street. The building was built in the same year so that it could show modern art. The goal of Wooson Gallery is to put the work of talented modern Korean artists on display in museums. This lets art fans talk with art critics and scholars, which helps them understand and recognize modern art better. This is one of the best contemporary art galleries in Korea that also tries to teach its visitors how art is made worldwide. This way, they can build their collections with expert knowledge and credibility.
